DIY Sleigh Bells From Old Belts

DIY Sleigh Bells From Old Belts

Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh…..

There’s nothing like the sound of sleigh bells to remind us of the holiday season.  I’ve hung these DIY Sleigh bells from doorknobs, laid them across mantels or a snow-covered piles of wood.  I even put them on my horses when I go out on sleigh rides, it’s the best sound you’ll ever hear!

DIY Sleigh Bells From Old Belts – Tutorial

Tools & Supplies:

  • Old belt (I found mine at the thrift store)
  • A long leather cord or lace (you can use a leather shoelace or buy cord at the craft store)
  • Bells
  • Leather hole punch or a hand drill with bits
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Punching the holes into the leather and adding the leather laces:

First, cut your belt to the length you want it to be.  I used a pair of scissors.

Next, using your hole punch (or hand drill), make holes where you want your bells to be.

Now, thread the cord through the hole in the leather.

Last, tie a knot in the cord on the backside of the belt close to the end of the cord.

Adding the Bells:

First, slide a bell through the cord on the front side of the belt.

Next, thread the cord back through the same hole.

Now, pull tight and thread the cord through the next hole, continuing as before.

You can see I’ve threaded a second bell onto the cord below.

Next, thread the cord back through the hole again as before.

Now, pull the cord tight making sure the bell are tightly secured. Continue until you have added all the bells to the remaining holes.

When you’re finished it should all look like this.  Make sure the cord is tight in-between all the bells to prevent them from sagging.  Sometimes the cord can stretch a little so I go back and double check in-between all the bells before finishing.

Last, tie a knot in the end of the cord and clip off the excess.

Now you are finished and ready to hang your sleigh bells!

Happy Holidays to you!

Thank you for visiting me today!  I love to hear from you!
