Sammy’s Star Spangled Banner

I love patriotic décor (can you tell?) and I’ve got my Sammy’s Star Spangled Banner display all ready for the 4th of July!  Lil Sammy is one of my most favorite pieces of Americana Decor, along with my Lil Betsy, because they are reproductions of vintage Americana from days gone by!  I love that Sammy is holding an old-fashioned firecracker in his hand.  No matter where I put him, he looks so cute and nostalgic!

A Vintage- Style, Patriotic Americana Vignette

Today, I have styled Lil Sammy on my white buffet. He is getting ready for the 4th of July fireworks!  Isn’t he adorable?

Sammys Star Spangled Banner - The paper mache figurine, Sammy, is standing in the middle of vignette on buffet.

This is a DIY showing Sammy's Star Spangled Banner vignette with American decor.

This vintage style, Americana display certainly gives a nod to days-gone-by, don’t you agree?

I have given all the details below on how you can put one like this together too!

Sammy’s Star Spangled Banner – How to Get This Look (tutorial)

Setting Up a Patriotic Background:

For the background, I wanted to minimize my picture, which didn’t go with the theme at all.  To help disguise it, I used an American flag ( you can get them anywhere this time of year), which I draped over the picture, partially covering it. Next, I had a small, white picket fence, which I had previously made, and strung a red, white and blue garland along the top of it, letting it drape as well.  The small, sparkly Pom Pom Garland is an adorable DIY that you can make HERE!  I think both the draped flag and the picket fence minimized the picture quite well.

Red, White and Blue Banner:

I also hung a red, white and blue, burlap banner in front of the hutch.  I found this banner at Pottery Barn on clearance.  It was such a good price, and I knew I couldn’t make one any cheaper, so it had to come home with me!

Patriotic Lil Sammy and Lil Betsy Ross Paper Mache Figures:

I bought Lil Sammy online a couple of years ago and I have used him every year since!  I just love him!!  Did you know there is also a Lil Betsy Ross that goes with him!  You can see my vignette with her HERE.  Both of these cuties are Bethany Lowe Design products and can be found online.

Tabletop Runners:

First, I draped a burlap runner that I have had for years over the buffet as a neutral base color.

Next, I placed a cute little placemat from Park Designs under Lil Sammy to add some color and ground the main focal piece.  I bought  this darling placemat at a little shop  near me called Orange Patch Two.  They carry seasonal Park Design products and I immediately fell in love with this particular pattern when I saw it because it was made to look like a primitive, handmade flag with hand stitching around it.

Patriotic Firecrackers:

Pier One had these red, white and blue, round firecrackers several years ago and I bought three different ones.  I loved them because they were different from the firecrackers you see all over the store shelves. They are now discontinued but Michaels had some round firecrackers this year that looked almost identical that were much cheaper than what I bought mine for.

These two tall firecrackers were found at Pier One several years ago.  They are also discontinued, but could be made from wooden posts, cardboard cylinders (I’m thinking those cardboard rolls that hold wrapping paper), etc. and painted to look like this.  You might also be lucky enough to find them used online or in a thrift store.

Patriotic Star

This patriotic, rustic star is one of my favorite patriotic pieces. I found it on clearance at Pottery Barn a couple of years ago and have used it every year since.

It is very well made and it looks naturally weathered and vintage.  Best of all, it came with a stand, but you can also use it without a stand as well.  I have also seen these wooden stars in many stores without the stand, so these wooden stars are not very hard to find.

You can see where I used this star in another patriotic display HERE!

Faux Plants:

Plants are the finishing touch in my decor!  They give so much texture and color, and they soften your display.  I finished my Sammy vignette by using various faux plants I already had, Including a red potted geranium, which came from a local shop near me, and a greenery bush from Hobby Lobby.

The small geranium stem, and the white floral bush I found at Hobby Lobby during their floral sale (which they have every other week).  The spiral topiary plant I actually found at a garage sale for almost nothing!

Books:

Of course, I always use vintage books for risers and for a patriotic look, I found blue and red ones one to stack.  The firecrackers were the same size so I needed to add height to one of them for interest.

Blue and red vintage books are used to raise the firecracker.

The same applies here.  The red geranium needed more height next to the green bush so I stacked it on a couple of red and blue vintage books.

Red and Blue books stacked to raise the red geraniums.

Now you have all the information on how to make this adorable Americana display!  I hope you enjoyed this.

Thanks for posting patriotic displays. My dad and brother were both in the military (Navy and Air Force respectively) during times of conflict so I’ve grown up respecting how and why we have our freedom. This display is so cool. Lots of things to look at, very colorful and inspiring.
