DIY Jean Pocket Patriotic Banner

It’s just a few days till our country’s birthday and I thought I’d squeeze one more patriotic project in!  This awesome little banner is so simple and I love how it enables us to recycle those favorite holey jeans that we keep holding onto, hoping that one day we’ll somehow find a way to mend them…(but we know that’ll never happen, right???).

My grandmother actually made me this banner out of my sweet grandfather’s jeans, after he passed, so they hold a special place in my heart.  He served in the Navy during WWII on a big ship, so I think they are extra fitting for my 4th of July décor! If you would like to make your own jean pocket banner, please check out my instructions below:

Tutorial:

Tools:

• Scissors
• Pencil
• Sewing machine or needle and thread (if you choose to hand sew)

Supplies:

• Five pockets from old jeans
• Half a yard of red and white fabric (for the letters)
• Red and white ribbon (to tie in-between pockets)
• Jute string (to hang banner)
• Letter stencils including a star (make sure the letters and star will fit onto pockets) We found all our stencils at Walmart.
• Jute string to hang banner

Directions:

First, cut out 5 jean pockets.

(Make sure to cut them out so that the back part of the pocket is still intact with the front part)

Next, gather the fabric that you’ll be using for your letters…

Now, trace your stencils onto the fabric and cut them out (a pencil works great, as the marks won’t show once you cut out your letters)

You can see everything is cut out and ready.

Next, sew on your letters.  In the picture below, you can see the dotted black lines where you need to sew.  If you don’t sew, you might try using fabric glue and just glue on your fabric letters and stars (although I have not tried this).

(As you can see, you will sew right through the back of the pocket, as shown below)

Now, using a hole punch, punch two holes into the back of the pockets and then run a string through to hang.

Last, tie some red and white ribbon in-between the pockets.

Now, you are finished and it’s ready to hang!  Easy Peasy!
