DIY Water Trough Storage Table
Who would have thought a stock tank/water trough that I normally would use in my pasture for the livestock, would look this good as a table!Oh, and check out all of the storage it holds! You can store just about anything inside such as blankets, toys, patio cushions, or fill it with ice and use it as a cooler for parties! (We’ve done this many times)
This table is so versatile, it can be used both outdoors and indoors. Plus, it’s so simple to make, you can have it whipped together in just an hour or two!
This is basically what the underside of the tabletop looks like. I built a frame that fits inside the top of the tank, then screwed the pallets to the frame. This keeps the tabletop stable, preventing it from sliding around.
Tutorial
Tools:
- Chop saw
- Hand drill with bits
- Belt Sander
- Jigsaw
- Pencil
- Tape Measure
Supplies:
- Oval shaped Galvanized Stock Tank (any size works) You can get them at your local feed store.
- Two 2x3s at 8ft (underneath frame)
- Pallet wood (I used new 1x5s and 1×3 planks) You’ll need enough to cover the top opening of your stock tank
- Box of Wood Screws at 2 1/2in
- Box of Wood or drywall screws at 1 1/4in
- My DIY Old Weathered Wood Stain (If you use new wood and want it to look old)
Directions:
Building Table Top:
This is the stock tank I bought.
First, find the dimensions of the top-inside of the tank. Build a frame that fits inside, with the 2 x 3s and 2-1/2 inch wood screws. I built mine so that it’s slightly snug (but not too tight) when I slid it in, so that the frame holds itself in place.
Next, cut the pallet boards to the length you want your table top (I cut my boards 2 or 3 inches longer than what I wanted my finished table top to be so that I’d have some ‘play’ before cutting and sanding
Since my frame fit snugly inside the top, I was able to screw on the tabletop pallets just as they lay. If your frame is loose and won’t stay put at the top, you’ll have to screw the frame and pallets together on the ground. If you do this, make sure they’re all lined up correctly, to prevent your tabletop from being crooked when you put it back onto your tank.
Now flip everything upside down.
Draw a line where you want your tabletop to overhang. I gave mine a 1/2 inch overhang)
Cut along the line you just made with the jigsaw.
Next, sand the edges down smooth with the belt sander.
Aging the Wood:
Since all of my planks were new (aside from the center plank), I slapped on a coat or two of my DIY Old Weathered Wood Stain to make all the planks match and look old and weathered.
Finished! You can paint or spray on a clear protective coat for the wood, otherwise, it’s ready to use!
Don’t you love it?!!
